Stanley Sackin, 75: Entrepreneur, author and lifelong community volunteer
Stanley Owen Sackin, 75, died January 27 with his family by his side in Atlanta, GA.
A memorial service will be held on his birthday, May 16, in Atlanta.
Stanley was born in Los Angeles, CA to Fanny and Ernest Sackin. Stanley demonstrated an entrepreneurial spirit while at Los Angeles High School, founding with his brother, Louis, The Swimmin’ Hole Gang, teaching swimming lessons.
He graduated from the University of California –Los Angeles (UCLA) with a B.A. in Political Science and was a member of the Zeta Beta Tau Fraternity.
As the owner of five local telephone services, he became the youngest president of the Association of TeleServices International (ATSI).   He started the indoor and exotic plant store “Little Green World” with his wife before co-founding two companies in the wireless industry in the early 1980’s. He relocated his family to Atlanta, GA in 1984 and in 1987 pursued the restaurant industry as one of the first national franchisees for the Johnny Rockets international restaurant chain. Other career highlights include the founding of Underground Airways in 1959; the naming of a mountain in his honor; and self-publishing a cookbook, “Secret Recipes,” in 1999.
In both Los Angeles and Atlanta, Stanley was an active volunteer in the community serving on the boards and/or in leadership positions for organizations including: the Center for Early Education, Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles, United Way, Nexus Contemporary Art Center Genesis Shelter, Jewish Family & Career Services of Atlanta, and most recently, MARTA Mobility.
Stanley is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 43 years, Stevie; his daughter Samantha and son-in-law Tom Fassbender and granddaughters Francesca and Jacqueline Fassbender of Los Angeles, CA; his daughter Cori of Atlanta, GA; his son Marvin and grandson Jacob of Pflugerville, TX; and his daughter Alexandra and son-in-law Arturo Hernandez, grandchildren Gloria and Julian and step-granddaughter Sianya of Atlanta, GA; and countless friends and family, all who will miss his incredible sense of humor, compassion and wisdom.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations are made to Jewish Family & Career Services of Atlanta (Alterman/JETS Transportation Fund or Aviv Older Adult Services Caregiver Support Services), Center for the Visually Impaired or the charity of your choice.
May his memory be a blessing.
