birthday pie.

we had a family birthday celebration for slim

on sunday. his birthday is on wednesday, march 7th! 

carolyn, my mom-in-law gave us a step by step

pie making lesson on saturday.

carolyn still uses this betty crocker pie & pastry

baking book from the 60's- you know i love this!

hate when that crisco sticks to the measuring cup?

fill it up with water to the amount you need &

fill it with crisco- bam, easy peasy cleanup!

this wire hand musher helps make perfect crust.

checkout this mat that lets you know how 

much crust to roll out to fit the pie dish.

*always use enough flour, but not too much b/c it'll make your dough rough & crack.

carolyn has the cutest top crust imprinters- apples 4 apple pie!

baked to perfection.

slim sliced a couple pounds of granny smiths.

after watching carolyn, i attempted my 1st pie.

rhubarb, blackberries & apples.

it tasted just as good as it looked!

owen presented the birthday boy with his pie

and then owen & oliver helped slim make a 

big wish & blow out the candles.

then i got some play time with the little guy.

oliver had a few bites of pie & couldn't stop raving

on & on about the soulful flavors.

long day of eating pies makes moma girl a tired pup.

farm burger with friends.

slim & i ventured out of the burbs & into decatur

to meet our fabulous cori & her sweet little ones.

farm burger is fun & delicious & 100% grassfed, local(ish) beef.

* and they have gluten free buns that aren't reminiscent of cardboard!

and of course we had to take a funny picture!

those two kids are so delicious & sweet- just like their aunt!

glo was so funny. we wrote notes 

back & forth throughout dinner.

this one says: "oh come on, you've got to be kidding me"

in response to me declining to play outside in the cold.

we had a valentine's brunch with our super sweet nephews

out of all of the gifts owen got for xmas his 

favorite was a huge whoopie cushion from santa.

it was so much fun to watch him use it and laugh so hard.

we all had a turn and it put the icing on the xmas cake.
